Research Question
Can we engineer copepod gut microbiomes towards enhanced fatty acid production?

The aim of my research is to understand the role of bacteria as food and in the digestion processes of benthic copepods. Copepods provide a natural polyunsaturated fatty acid source which is currently not used in aquaculture. Generally, copepods derive their fatty acids from diatoms, but also bacteria are in play. The possibility of steering the copepod gut microbiome towards enhanced fatty acid production is interesting.
